Brainteaser Orchestra is the thirteen-piece ensemble of composer and conductor Tyn Wybenga (b. 1993), blending jazz, hip-hop, electronics and contemporary classical music through a distinctive method: improvised solos by the musicians are sliced into hundreds of samples and reshaped live into new compositions. Dubbed 'the future-jazz-conductor of today' by Dutch newspaper NRC, the ensemble won the 2022 Deutscher Jazzpreis for Best International Debut Album and has performed at North Sea Jazz, JazzAhead and Jazz sous les Pommiers. In July 2026, at Pat Metheny's own request, Wybenga arranged Metheny's debut album Bright Size Life for the orchestra - a concert at North Sea Jazz that DownBeat called the festival's pinnacle. Their second album, Tonepool Paradox, was commissioned by the Bimhuis to mark its fiftieth anniversary and is set for release in autumn 2026.
Op North Sea Jazz 2026 presenteerde Wybenga 'Bright Size Life Reimagined' samen met Pat Metheny en het Brainteaser Orchestra; DownBeat noemde het concert het hoogtepunt van het festival.
Het tweede album *Tonepool Paradox*, geschreven in opdracht van het Bimhuis ter gelegenheid van zijn vijftigjarig bestaan, wordt in 2026 uitgebracht.
Het ensemble speelde een uitverkochte première in het Concertgebouw tijdens het Grachtenfestival 2025.
Wybenga ontving in 2024 de Compositieopdracht van North Sea Jazz en trad op met het volledige Metropole Orkest en zangeres Lizz Wright.
Het orkest opende het Südtirol Jazzfestival Alto Adige 2025, waarna meerdere subformaties van het ensemble het festival verder bespeelden.
