Flautist Mark Lotz presents his new album Freshta, dedicated to Afghan activist Freshta Kohistani. On the album (Berthold/Zennez Records), he combines the European polyphonic tradition with the dynamic energy of jazz - from delicate whispered tones to rousing outbursts.

He performs with a quintet of European musicians: Claudio Puntin on clarinet, Jörg Brinkmann on cello, Jeroen van Vliet on piano and Dirk-Peter Kölsch on drums. JazzHalo called the result "a compelling and equally poignant as serene musical tribute".

American All About Jazz wrote that Lotz "brings sensuality back to jazz"; Los Angeles Jazz Scene Magazine described him as "one of the world's finest jazz flautists".

Swiss-born, Berlin-based clarinetist Puntin has spent more than three decades crossing between jazz, free improvisation and contemporary classical music. His collaborators range from Carla Bley and Steve Reich to the Ensemble Modern, and awards including the WDR Jazz Prize reflect a career that consistently pushes beyond genre boundaries.
