Mark Alban Lotz (Tübingen, 1963) is a German flutist, composer and improviser based in Zeist, the Netherlands, whose work spans jazz, contemporary chamber music and global traditions. Raised in Thailand, Uganda and Germany, he studied jazz flute at the Hilversum Conservatory and classical music at the Amsterdam School of the Arts, and has since appeared as soloist or composer on more than 70 albums. He teaches in the jazz department of the Utrecht Conservatory and gives masterclasses worldwide. His 2023 album Freshta, a commission by Buma/Stemra and the Dutch jazz venues federation, is dedicated to the memory of murdered Afghan women's rights activist Freshta Kohistani.
Mandala Tribe, the ensemble of Lotz with Stefan Schmid and Heiko Dijker, is featured in a VPRO Vrije Geluiden special about Indian music, and announces a debut album for autumn 2026.
Lotz founded his own record label Sonic Squid Music, dedicated to his own releases and artistic vision.
The Freshta ensemble presented the album of the same name live in its entirety during a concert at the Beauforthuis in Austerlitz.
