Privacy policy

This page sets out what ietstedoen.nl records about the people who visit, and what it deliberately leaves alone. Plain words, because a policy you have to decode is worth nothing.

Who runs the site

ietstedoen.nl is a private project, run from Prague (Czech Republic). No company behind it, no ad network reading over our shoulder. Questions about your data, something you want erased, or something that looks wrong: info@ietstedoen.nl.

What we record

Cookies, technical and needed for the site to work:

  • ietstedoen_voter - an anonymous code (UUID), valid one year. Your own “Going” and “Not going” marks hang off it.
  • ietstedoen_sid - a visit code that lasts 30 minutes. Used only to tell one visit from another in the stats.

LocalStorage, which stays in your own browser and never reaches us:

  • theme - light, dark or automatic.
  • ietstedoen_city - the city you filter by.
  • ietstedoen_tag_filter - the genres you ticked.
  • a handful of keys starting with ietstedoen_pwa_: a count of your visits and of the events you already opened. That is how the “add ietstedoen.nl to your home screen” bar knows when it may show up and when to keep quiet.

Visit statistics, ours and on our own server. No Google Analytics, no ad pixels:

  • Your IP address is used to derive country and city (see Third parties) and to spot abuse, scrapers for instance. We do not keep it. The database holds a SHA-256 fingerprint only, computed with a secret key that never leaves the project.
  • Country, city and region, derived from that IP address.
  • Browser, operating system, language setting, phone or desktop, and whether the traffic looks like a bot.
  • Which page you asked for, with which query parameters, and which site you arrived from (the referer).
  • Your marks on events. They hang off the anonymous ietstedoen_voter cookie and off nothing else.

What we never record

  • Your name, email, phone number or address. We never ask, and there is no account to create.
  • Payment details. There is nothing here to buy.
  • Special categories of personal data: health, religion, political views, sexual orientation.
  • Advertising profiles. We do not follow you onto other websites and we sell nothing on.

Why we record it

  • Without ietstedoen_voter the site would lose your marks on the very next click.
  • Without ietstedoen_sid we could not tell ten visitors apart from one person opening ten pages.
  • The stats tell us where visitors go: which cities, which genres, which evenings. That is about the whole, not about you.
  • Geolocation decides which city we can show straight away, so you do not have to set a filter first.

The legal basis is legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f) of the GDPR, called the AVG in the Netherlands): running the site and making it better. The cookies above are functional and the statistics barely touch your privacy, so Dutch law (Article 11.7a of the Telecommunications Act) asks for no consent. That is why there is no cookie banner to click away.

Third parties

  • ip-api.com - a free service that turns an IP address into country, city and region. We send the address, they send the place back. We keep the answer for 30 days, filed under the fingerprint of the IP address rather than the address itself, so we need not ask again on every visit.
  • Let’s Encrypt - issues the TLS certificate for https. Beyond the domain name they learn nothing.

Nobody else. The site runs on our own rented server inside the EU, with no external analytics or ad platform in between. Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, third-party ad cookies, retargeting: none of it is here.

How long we keep it

  • ietstedoen_voter cookie: one year after your last visit.
  • ietstedoen_sid cookie: 30 minutes of inactivity.
  • Visit statistics: twelve months, then they go.
  • Your marks on events: as long as you want them. Click again to drop one, or throw the ietstedoen_voter cookie out of your browser.
  • Whatever sits in localStorage: until you clear it yourself. It lives on your device, not with us.

Your rights (GDPR / AVG)

You have the right:

  • to know what data we hold about you;
  • to have it corrected or erased;
  • to restrict the processing or object to it;
  • to complain to a supervisory authority. For this site that is the Dutch Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens. If you live elsewhere in the EU, the authority in your own country will take the complaint too.

Since we never ask you anything and store nothing with your name on it, “you” is in practice that anonymous code in the ietstedoen_voter cookie. To be certain nothing of yours is left: clear the cookies for ietstedoen.nl in your browser. After that it is as if we had never met.

If something changes, a new source we read or a field we start storing, we update this page and put the new date underneath.
