Van Eijck / Brinkmann / Vespestad

Pianist and composer Sjoerd van Eijck presents Pegasus, his new album recorded with German cellist Jörg Brinkmann and Norwegian drummer Jarle Vespestad. The trio was formed in 2019 when Van Eijck invited Brinkmann and Vespestad for a Carte Blanche concert at Paradox, a collaboration that eventually led to this album.

The compositions on Pegasus are largely written by Van Eijck and draw inspiration from astronomy and the imagination of the cosmos. With piano, cello and drums, the trio moves between jazz, chamber music and contemporary improvisation: classical idiom is palpably present, but the openness and spontaneity of jazz remain at the core.

Brinkmann and Vespestad both have strong reputations in the European jazz and improvisation scene. Vespestad is internationally known for his long-standing collaboration with ECM pianist Tord Gustavsen; Brinkmann combines classical cello technique with improvisation in a way that gives him a unique place in that landscape.
