Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble - Orient Express

The Roeland Hendrikx Ensemble takes the audience on a musical journey through Central and Eastern Europe, with a programme featuring four composers who each in their own way connected sound to distant destinations, homesickness and imagination.

The journey opens with Alexander Glazunov's Rêverie Orientale, a work that sketches not so much an actual landscape as the fascination of nineteenth-century composers with the unknown. Next comes the Quartettino by Hungarian composer Rezső Kókai, lyrical and melancholic in character. Four Pieces by Belgian composer Wim Henderickx forms a stop closer to home: four contrasting movements for clarinet and strings.

The programme concludes with Johannes Brahms' Clarinet Quintet - written under the impression of clarinet virtuoso Richard Mühlfeld and regarded as one of the highlights of the Romantic chamber music repertoire.
