Amira al Rawi - Majnun
Theater De Verbeelding, Purmerend
In Majnun, dance and music merge into a contemporary adaptation of the classic Arabic love story of Layla and Majnun - a 7th-century tale of forbidden passion, madness and alienation. Amira al Rawi combines hip-hop, street styles and flamenco with live Arabo-Andalusian music from the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra. The performance presents alienation not as a deficit, but as a source of strength and imagination, exploring how to break through the masks of identity.
Amira al Rawi is a self-taught dancer and theatre maker with a background in hip-hop and street styles - including hip-hop all-styles, Waacking and House dance. She recently added flamenco to her practice. The Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra (AAO) received the Cultuurfonds Prize in 2024 and works from a tradition open to jazz, flamenco and contemporary composition.
Majnun is a production by Amira al Rawi in collaboration with the Amsterdam Andalusian Orchestra and Maas theatre and dance.
