Iskander Moon
Iskander Moens began his musical journey in the choir ensemble Collegium Vocale Gent, where he toured Europe and deepened his love for Bach under the guidance of Philippe Herreweghe. He also composed vocal music for Dionysos Now!, drawing on polyphony as inspiration. Six years of classical piano studies at MUDA in Gent - with Bach and Debussy as constant companions - provided a solid foundation, but the strict adherence to scores in classical music soon felt too limiting.
He found the other side of his musical personality in pop music: first as singer and bassist in the tuxedo rock band HYPER! (for eight years), then in the fusion band Shikata Ga Nai. "There I had more chance to express myself, and no one dictated how I should sound. Improvisation had all the space it needed, and freedom beckoned." Recently he also completed his master's degree in Music Production at the Conservatorium van Gent.
In his solo work, under the name Iskander Moon, he sounds more subtle and personal. Over the past years he has regularly travelled to Berlin, Gothenburg, New York and Florence, where as a multi-instrumentalist he honed his singer-songwriter skills at open mic nights: write a song and perform it live a few hours later for an audience that responds immediately.
