Afro Anatolian Tales

ARIFA, formerly known as Afro Anatolian Tales, is the sound laboratory of Turkish-Dutch percussionist Sjahin During. Ethnic rhythms, electronic layers and improvisation merge in what the band describes as a bridge between East and West - a cultural exchange along the ancient Silk Road.

Sounds from the Silk Road blend with contemporary compositions, improvisation and digital sound design. Afro-Anatolian percussion, tanbur, cello and trumpet interweave with electronic textures into a cinematic soundscape.

The ensemble has performed at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Barbican in London, Havana Jazz in Cuba, the Jarasum Jazz Festival in Korea, the Jodhpur Riff Festival in India and Jazz à Vienne in France - alongside North Sea Jazz and BBC London. In total 32 countries, five continents. Five albums, five times awarded best world music album of the Netherlands by MixedWorldMusic. The new production Tarab Dance toured in 2026; Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Den Bosch sold out before the series was fully underway.
