Boi Akih Performs Handel's Messiah

Handel's Messiah is known to most people as a monumental oratorio for large choir and orchestra, famous for its Hallelujah. BOI AKIH takes a completely different approach: an idiosyncratic, contemporary interpretation of the masterwork from 1741, with great respect for the original composition.

The ensemble consists of Monica Akihary (vocals), Niels Brouwer (seven-string guitar), Sekou Dioubaté (kora) and Saskia Meijs (viola). Stillness and rhythm alternate, and Akihary's voice gives the classical texts new resonance.

This approach actually aligns closely with Handel's own working method. The composer was inspired by the craftsmanship of his soloists, rewrote his work as a performance demanded, and was open to new styles and ideas.
