Bulgarian percussionist and marimba virtuoso Tatiana Koleva brings together the rhythms of flamenco and the Balkans in Wood Nymphs. Together with flamenco dancer Claudia Karapanou, she engages in dialogue from within a wooden installation that serves as a resonating body. Marimba and footwork challenge each other within the 'twelve beats' - the rhythmic cycle characteristic of many flamenco and Balkan styles - with tupans (folk drums) as the driving force and the kaval (Bulgarian shepherd's flute) as a coloring element.

The programme consists of new, original compositions, including a specially arranged Soleá by Florian Magnus Maier, originally written for Koleva.

About: Tatiana Koleva

Tatiana Koleva is a Bulgarian percussionist and marimba virtuoso known for weaving together flamenco and Balkan rhythms. She works with traditional instruments such as the tupan and kaval alongside the marimba, and creates original compositions that bridge music and movement. Her project Wood Nymphs, made with flamenco dancer Claudia Karapanou, is one of her signature works.
