Mike Oldfield (born 15 May 1953 in Reading) is a British multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer who made his name with the debut album Tubular Bells (1973) - simultaneously the very first release on Richard Branson's Virgin Records. Recorded when he was nineteen, the album sold an estimated fifteen million copies worldwide and won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition in 1975, boosted in large part by its use in the horror film The Exorcist. Over the following decades he released twenty-five studio albums spanning progressive rock, electronic, classical and folk influences, before retiring from recording after Return to Ommadawn in 2017.
Grammy-nominated conductor Robin Smith announced a new UK tour for February and March 2026, featuring music from all three Tubular Bells albums performed live.
To mark the fiftieth anniversary of Tubular Bells, a commemorative edition was released on double vinyl, CD and Blu-ray, including the previously unreleased demo Tubular Bells 4 Intro from 2017.
The eight-minute demo Tubular Bells 4 Intro, which was recorded in 2017 but never completed, is expected to be Olfield's last studio recording.
