ARENDS - De Poezieboys & Theatergroep ECHO — Kantine Walhalla, Rotterdam

In ARENDS, the Poezieboys and punk-poetic theatre group ECHO join forces for an evening dedicated to poet Jan Arends - stingy, lean and self-sabotaging, yet playful and humorous. The performance combines poetry, personal stories, tirades, late-night phone conversations and absurd fantasy worlds.

Jan Arends was regarded as one of the most uncompromising voices in Dutch literature. In spare, razor-sharp poems, he wrote about loneliness, psychological suffering and the feeling of not belonging anywhere - sharp and unpredictable, yet beneath his rage and helplessness lay a deeply wounded person.

Starting from his work, Anna Schoen, Joep Hendrikx and Jos Nargy pose one central question: how much space do we make for people who don't fit?

About Theatergroep ECHO
Theatergroep ECHO creates raw, absurdist and activist theatre. Their productions explore the edges of what is comfortable and question how people relate to a world that increasingly demands control and manageability. Through alienation, humour and poetry, they attempt to break open fixed ways of thinking.

About the Poezieboys
The Poezieboys (Jos Nargy and Joep Hendrikx) create energetic and disruptive poetry performances in which literature, performance and music converge. Inspired by the legendary poetry evening of Simon Vinkenoog at Carré in 1966, they ask themselves why poetry so rarely fills a packed hall these days. Previously they created GHOSTS, LORCA and PEREC, and performed at De Parade, Oerol and Lowlands.
