CARMEN (MUST DIE) - No Mad Is Me/Giovanni Brand & DOX

Theatermaker Giovanni Brand deconstructs Bizet's Roma-hostile opera Carmen with humor, boldness and musical fire. The production draws a thick line through the clichéd image of the unpredictable, fiery and dangerous people that made Bizet famous.

At the center is Dimitri, who as the first Roma actor plays the role of Carmen. During rehearsals, he discovers that he not only performs Carmen, but is himself trapped in the stereotypical image of the Roma people. In a slapstick tour de force, he wages a battle that simultaneously takes aim at and sharpens the diversity debate.

Carmen (must die) is an interdisciplinary collision of opera, flamenco and theatre - a production in which original arias clash head-on with flamenco and humor rubs against pain. For opera lovers, for opera haters, for everyone who thinks they already know this story.
