J-Dilla - The Shining | Deep Listening Session

Pitchblack Playback: J Dilla - The Shining | 20th Anniversary Listening Session
Saturday 3 October 2026, 11:30 - 12:30 (album duration: 36:25)

Teylers Museum, in collaboration with Pitchblack Playback, FFF Sound System and Koda, presents a series of deep listening sessions during the Haarlem Vinyl Festival. Each session focuses on one album, from start to finish, in complete darkness and without distraction. Phone away, eyes closed, full attention to the music.

Featured is The Shining by J Dilla, released posthumously in 2006. The album combines dusty drums, soulful samples and off-kilter rhythms with rich, layered production - characteristic of Dilla's approach to rhythm, sampling and groove. Sound is provided by FFF Sound System, a high-fidelity four-way horn system designed and built in Rotterdam by Form Follows Frequency. For each session, the system is tuned to the acoustics of the specific space.

The sessions take place at Teylers Museum, the oldest museum in the Netherlands (open since 1784). The ticket includes museum access and a recycled cotton eye mask. The session is also accessible with a Haarlem Vinyl Festival Weekend Pass (limited capacity).

Note: late arrival is not possible. Make sure you arrive on time.
