With Via Crucis, Franz Liszt composed one of his most remarkable works near the end of his life. In fourteen musical stations, he traces the path of the crucifixion. Liszt eschews grand drama in favour of stillness and a surprisingly modern sound world - with sparse harmonies and a compelling simplicity that keeps the work contemporary even today.
In this recital, pianist Martijn Smits performs Via Crucis in its entirety. It is a rarely performed work, in which Liszt reveals himself as a visionary composer who whispers where other works speak.
