Nemea String Quartet

The Nemea String Quartet consists of four Spanish musicians who, after completing their master's studies at Codarts Conservatorium in Rotterdam, are now studying at the Dutch String Quartet Academy. There they work with violinist Marc Danel of the Quatuor Danel and Denis Brott, founder and artistic director of the Montreal Chamber Music Festival.

The programme is titled "From Vienna to America" and comprises three works from different periods in the history of the string quartet. Mozart's String Quartet in D minor, K. 421 (1783) is the only mature string quartet he wrote in a minor key and belongs to the six quartets he later dedicated to Haydn. Haydn's String Quartet in G major, Op. 77 No. 1 (1799), written at the end of his career, is characterised by energy, humour and continuous musical interplay between the four instruments. The concert concludes with Dvořák's "American" Quartet, Op. 96 - composed in just twelve days in 1893 during his stay in Spillville, Iowa - in which Bohemian musical traditions and American influences converge.
