The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, founded in Amsterdam in 1888, ranks among the world's most celebrated symphony orchestras. Under a succession of distinguished chief conductors - from Willem Mengelberg and Bernard Haitink to Mariss Jansons - it has developed a distinctively homogeneous sound shaped in part by the exceptional acoustics of its home hall. Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä, artistic partner since 2022, will take over as eighth chief conductor in September 2027.
