Boy from the Dessa + live: Rudy & His Fascinators

Rudy Lentze lives in Groningen and is praised by major names in music - yet remains largely unknown to the general public. The documentary Boy from the Dessa changes that: the film follows his life and weaves together seventy years of pop music and world history from his perspective, using archival footage and sound recordings from the Groningen Archives.

Rudy was born in Indonesia, the son of an 'Indo' father with German roots and a Sundanese mother. The family moved to the Netherlands soon after, where he grew up caught between cultures. His home was unstable, his youth turbulent - and in music he found his way out.

The film explores themes that shaped his life in the Netherlands: migration and the legacy of the Dutch East Indies. After the screening, Rudy performs with his band Rudy & his Fascinators for approximately 30 minutes live in the cinema.
