All You Need Is Kill (2025): Kaboom Anime
Melkweg presents this anime together with Kaboom Animation Festival on the big screen. The story began in 2004 as a Japanese science fiction light novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. Ten years later came adaptations as a manga series, American graphic novel, and the Hollywood blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow - and now there is an anime, directed by Kenichiro Akimoto.
All You Need Is Kill is a cross between Groundhog Day (1993) and a video game: each time you die, the day starts over, but with a bit more knowledge of what's coming - something involving an alien being and the total destruction of Earth. Akimoto and his team made two striking changes: the main characters are no longer heavily armed soldiers but civilians, and the lead role has shifted from Keiji to Rita. Rita is - the word doesn't quite fit, but the layer is there - depressed, which fits seamlessly with an existence where every day resembles the previous one and tomorrow doesn't matter.
This makes the series, amid brightly choreographed action scenes and the angular, scratchy design that Studio 4°C has already made a name for, essentially a series of therapy sessions: if Rita doesn't want to spend the rest of her life dying, she will have to start taking an interest in every detail of today, with tomorrow in mind.
Multiple programmes often take place simultaneously at Melkweg, such as concerts and club nights. Please note that there may be noise from other rooms during the screening.
