Film By The Sea: The Cycle of Love
Every year, Podium 't Beest, a satellite venue of Film By The Sea, screens a curated selection of films from the festival programme. Today's screening is The Cycle of Love, the latest film by Oscar-winning director Orlando von Einsiedel (The White Helmets).
The story takes place in 1975, when young Indian PK falls in love with Swedish Lotta. When she returns home, he sets out on a second-hand bicycle - with barely any money - on a journey of over 10,000 kilometres to find her again. PK is a dalit, born at the bottom of the Indian caste system and destined for a life of poverty and exclusion. At his birth, an astrologer made a special prediction about his future beloved; meeting Lotta in New Delhi seems to confirm that prophecy. The story is still told in Swedish primary schools.
Von Einsiedel retraces the journey with PK and a young actor who portrays him, connecting past and present through reconstructions, interviews and encounters along the way.
Note: Film By The Sea free tickets or passes are not valid for screenings at 't Beest.
