Akira (1988)
The restored version of the anime classic Akira (1988) by Katsuhiro Otomo is showing at the Melkweg cinema.
The story is set in Neo-Tokyo, a megalopolis built on Tokyo Bay - 31 years after a new type of weapon of mass destruction triggered World War III. As the city prepares for the Olympic Games, Kaneda, leader of a bōsōzoku motorcycle gang, rides through the desolate streets. When his gang member Tetsuo collides with a mysterious test subject from a government experiment, both are taken to a military laboratory. Kaneda attempts to free Tetsuo and discovers his friend has developed supernatural powers - while one of the test subjects predicts the awakening of the highly classified AKIRA.
The Melkweg regularly hosts multiple programmes simultaneously, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may be noise from other programmes elsewhere in the building during the screening.
