Book of Returns - Day 1
MAZE Festival presents 'Book of Returns', a day of compositions exploring memory and association. Featuring performances by Yannis Kyriakides, Peter Ablinger, Jasna Veličković and Christian Marclay.
Yannis Kyriakides (born in Limassol, Cyprus, 1969) is a composer and sound artist who moved to the United Kingdom at age five and has lived in the Netherlands since 1992, now based in Amsterdam. He studied musicology at the University of York and later composition at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague under Louis Andriessen and Dick Raaijmakers. His catalogue of over a hundred works, spanning music theatre, electroacoustic pieces and sound installations, explores the relationship between language, perception and emotion, and has been performed at major festivals and by leading ensembles worldwide. He co-founded the label Unsounds, is a member of ensemble MAZE, and teaches composition at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague.
His contemporary arrangement Ein Schemen, interwoven with Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, resonates in the dance production Anima Obscura by Scapino Ballet, which is on tour with nearly fifty performances until June 2026.
On 11 February 2026, the CEAM Artists performed his work Telegraphic for ensemble and live electronics at the Biomechanics Festival, with a Russian premiere at the Moscow Philharmonic.
During Gaudeamus Festival 2025 in Utrecht, his work was part of the extensive program with more than 45 concerts.
He is working on a new generative score for Kristia Michael and Sibil·la Ensemble, based on the mystical language Lingua Ignota invented by Hildegard von Bingen, for the Sacred Music Festival of the Greek National Opera.
He rehearses and records with a new group together with Giuseppe Doronzo, Andy Moor and Frank Rosaly, with Kyriakides himself on electronics.
😴 Nothing scheduled with this artist in the near future.
