Pieter Serrien is a Belgian historian and author who writes accessible non-fiction about the Low Countries. His book *Het verloren land* tells the story of the United Netherlands, the sixteenth-century state that emerged from the religious wars tearing apart the region - and eventually split into what are now Belgium and the Netherlands.
