Djavan (Djavan Caetano Viana, born 27 January 1949 in Maceió, Brazil) is a singer, guitarist and songwriter who has been one of the most beloved voices in Brazilian popular music for five decades. His style weaves bossa nova, samba, jazz and African rhythms together with poetic lyrics and complex harmonies - a sound he developed as a self-taught violão player. His compositions have been recorded by artists including Al Jarreau, Carmen McRae and The Manhattan Transfer, and he has collaborated with Stevie Wonder and Paco de Lucía. In 2000 he won the inaugural Latin Grammy for Best Brazilian Song with 'Acelerou'.
