Věra Chytilová (Ostrava, 1929 - Prague, 2014) was the sole female director of the Czech New Wave and one of the most uncompromising filmmakers in the history of Czech cinema. She was the only woman in her class at Prague's FAMU film academy, where she made her graduation film Ceiling (Strop, 1961), which drew rare international attention for a student work. Her later Daisies (Sedmikrásky, 1966) was banned by Czechoslovak authorities but went on to become one of the most celebrated films of the European avant-garde.
Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam screens Daisies (Sedmikrásky) as part of the Eye Classics series, in 4K restoration.
The 4K restoration of Daisies premiered in the Classics section of the Cannes Film Festival.
The House of European History in Brussels screened Daisies on the occasion of International Women's Day 2024, as part of a triptych about European female filmmakers.
