Female Directors Behind the Iron Curtain

Eat Your Feelings CINEMA is a film evening that brings together storytelling, food and cinema from a feminist perspective. The evening opens with an introductory talk and eating instructions, followed by an informal Q&A with drinks and the sharing of stories and experiences.

This is the second screening in a miniseries about female directors in Eastern Europe during the Iron Curtain era.

dir. Tatjana Ivančić | 1975, Yugoslavia, short documentary
Ivančić (1913-1986) made around seventy Super 8mm films over two decades (1960-1980), using a Russian camera her son no longer needed. Her work, always rooted in everyday life, screened successfully on the amateur film festival circuit in former Yugoslavia. Variations is no exception: a brief, poetic glimpse at the beauty of small things.

Ceiling / Strop (40')
dir. Věra Chytilová | 1962, Czechoslovakia, short documentary
Strop is Chytilová's graduation film from the FAMU academy in Prague. The film follows Marta (played by non-actress Marta Kaňkovská), a young woman who trades her medical studies for a career as a fashion model in Prague. Behind the glamorous exterior, her alienation from the superficiality and sexism of the fashion industry grows. The film explores Chytilová's central theme: emancipation. Among the extras are future names of the Czechoslovak New Wave, including FAMU students Jiří Menzel and Miloš Forman.

The screening is accompanied by an unconventional buffet inspired by the work of Polish artist Natalia LL, "Consumer Art" (1972), including a Polaroid photo shoot with her signature props: bananas and vanilla pudding.
