NIVOZ Film Evening: Heroes of the Galaxy. With Mirjam Marks.

This third NIVOZ Film Evening features the youth documentary "Heroes of the Galaxy" by director Mirjam Marks.

The film follows five children - Nour, Abdulatif, Laila and brothers Basel and Mohammad - who live temporarily with their families on the MS Galaxy, a former cruise ship serving as an asylum seeker centre in Amsterdam. They make friends, play football, learn to swim and play while waiting for clarity about their future. Marks deliberately chooses the perspective of the children themselves: not their refugee status is central, but who they are as individuals.

The film aligns with the NIVOZ annual theme "Through the Eyes of the Other" and raises questions about parenting and living together: how do we look at children from different backgrounds, and what do we learn when we truly try to see through their eyes?

After the screening there will be a conversation with Mirjam Marks about making the documentary and the children she met on the Galaxy. The evening is facilitated by Inge Spaander. From 18:00 there is a shared meal; the programme begins at 19:00.

The NIVOZ film programme is intended for teachers, school leaders, educators and others who wish to be nourished by film and conversation. In March, NIVOZ will again organise the National Education Film Month, together with partners such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
