Mirjam Marks (born 1965) is a Dutch documentary director who specialised in youth documentaries at VPRO Jeugd after studying Theatre Studies. She lived in Suriname from 1998 to 2011, making documentaries and co-founding the children's museum Villa Zapakara in Paramaribo. Back in the Netherlands she worked as a television programmer at Cinekid and, from 2018, collaborated with Stichting De Vrolijkheid on arts projects for children in asylum-seeker centres - work that fed directly into her four-part magical-realist series *Helden van de Galaxy* (VPRO/Tangerine Tree, 2026), which had its world premiere at the Movies that Matter Festival.
Helden van de Galaxy is available from 31 May 2026 on NPO Zapp and NPO Start, every Sunday at 19:20.
The series had its world premiere on 28 March 2026 at the Movies that Matter Festival.
On 23 August 2026 there was a screening of Helden van de Galaxy at Het Puntje in The Hague, followed by a post-screening discussion with the director and an animation workshop.
In 2023 VPRO broadcast the youth documentary series Kinderen van Mavungu, produced by Tangerine Tree and co-created with Vinije Haabo.
Kinderen van Mavungu was shown in October 2023 at Cinekid, with Marks present at the screenings in Pathé Amsterdam Noord.
