Spoken Word in Splendor: Alma Mathijsen
Writer Alma Mathijsen performs spoken word with musicians Oene van Geel and Remco Menting in an experimental evening drawn from her work-in-progress novel.
Alma Mathijsen (born 1984 in Amsterdam) is a Dutch author, the daughter of literary historian Marita Mathijsen and violinist Hub Mathijsen. She made her novelistic debut in 2011 with Alles is Carmen and went on to publish Vergeet de meisjes (shortlisted for the BNG Bank Literatuurprijs), Bewaar de zomer (nominated for the Libris Literatuurprijs) and Onderland (2024), for which she worked with nine fellow survivors of sexual violence to turn their stories into parables. Alongside her prose she regularly performs as a spoken word artist, appearing at festivals such as Lowlands, Oerol and Crossing Border.
Mathijsen was the first guest in Het Fragment, the new interview series in the LAB 8½ hall of LAB111 in Amsterdam.
She was a guest on the podcast DAMN, HONEY (episode 287) for a conversation about sexual violence.
In a report by L1 Nieuws, Mathijsen talked about her writing routine in Limburg, where she regularly stays to work.
Her most recent novel Onderland was published in May 2024 by publisher De Bezige Bij.
