The Van Gogh Museum on Museumplein holds the world's largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh - over 200 paintings, 500 drawings and thousands of letters. The main building was designed by Gerrit Rietveld and opened in 1973; the elliptical wing added in 1999 is the work of Kisho Kurokawa. Alongside the permanent collection, the museum hosts major temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
