James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) was a painter, printmaker, art theorist and enfant terrible - an influencer before the term existed. "Whistler. Dandy and Maverick" is the first major retrospective exhibition in the Netherlands dedicated to this remarkable artist, on view at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The Van Gogh Museum on Museumplein holds the world's largest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh - over 200 paintings, 500 drawings and thousands of letters. The main building was designed by Gerrit Rietveld and opened in 1973; the elliptical wing added in 1999 is the work of Kisho Kurokawa. Alongside the permanent collection, the museum hosts major temporary exhibitions throughout the year.
