When peat extraction in Muijeveld and Oud-Loosdrecht declined, residents found new work in fishing, polder management, and herb gathering. In the early 1900s, Rutger and Neeltje Vlug took the first step toward recreation by offering boat rentals, which ultimately laid the foundation for the growth of water sports in Loosdrecht.
