Lecture The Dutch Historian
Oosterland – Oosterlanderkerk, Den Oever
The Dutch Historian is the initiative of Axel Stam and Lars Boon, who make history accessible and understandable through a popular Instagram account and podcast. During this interactive evening, two stories from their book A Small Country Full of History take centre stage.
Story 1: The Invasion of 1799 - British and Russian forces landed on the North Holland coast to overthrow the Batavian Republic. Many residents consequently had English, Russian or Batavian soldiers billeted in their homes. Today little is known about this, though references still exist - such as the Russian Monument in Bergen.
Story 2: The Double Draining of the Wieringermeer Polder - Drained in 1930, but flooded again during the Second World War. How did this happen, where did residents flee, how was the water removed, and what remains visible of this disaster today?
Axel and Lars also share historical facts about the region, previously featured on their Instagram account. Doors open from 19:30, including coffee or tea upon arrival. Tickets are available through the ticket shop and at the door. Parking is available at Keizerspoeldijk near the church.
