Koolhoven's Choice: Ex Machina — Podium 't Beest, Goes
Description was written before the event

In Koolhoven's Choice, filmmaker Martin Koolhoven guides the audience through film history via carefully selected scenes, accompanied by anecdotes and his candid opinions.

This evening focuses on artificial intelligence in film. From the robot Maria in Metropolis and HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey to the replicants in Blade Runner and the operating system Samantha in Her - Koolhoven shows how filmmakers have grappled over the years with what happens when a machine develops its own will, a future that now suddenly feels very close.

After the intermission, Ex Machina (Alex Garland, 2014) is screened. Caleb, a 26-year-old programmer at the world's largest internet company, wins a week with Nathan, the reclusive CEO of the company. Once at the remote location, he discovers he is part of an experiment where he meets the first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a robot girl.

19:30 - Martin Koolhoven discusses films on the theme using clips, anecdotes and frank opinions
21:00 - Intermission
21:15 - Ex Machina (Alex Garland, 2014)
