Juste une Illusion

As part of Film By The Sea, Podium 't Beest screens a selection of festival highlights. Tonight features Juste une Illusion, the latest film by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, the duo behind major French hits like Intouchables and Hors Normes.

It is 1985: The Cure and Imagination battle for the top spot on the charts, Kohl and Mitterrand move across the world stage. Nearly thirteen-year-old Vincent grows up in a suburb of Paris, where not only the global economy but also his family is in crisis. Father Yves (Louis Garrel) has lost his job but doesn't dare tell anyone. Mother Sandrine (Camille Cottin) longs for more challenge after years as a secretary. Tensions regularly erupt into fierce arguments. As the family threatens to fall apart, Vincent experiences his first great love and takes his first steps toward adulthood.

Nakache and Toledano return with a feel-good film that, like their earlier work, does not shy away from social problems but above all shows how hilarious everyday life can be. Juste une Illusion is an ode to the music, fashion and radio games of the 1980s, but above all a timeless story about a teenager finding himself and parents rediscovering each other.
