Film By The Sea: Juste une Illusion — Podium 't Beest, Goes

Podium 't Beest partners with Film By The Sea to present a curated selection from the festival programme. Tonight features the latest film by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, the acclaimed French directors behind Intouchables and Hors Normes.

Juste une Illusion is set in 1985, when The Cure and Imagination dominated the charts and Kohl and Mitterrand shaped world politics. Nearly thirteen-year-old Vincent grows up in a suburb of Paris where his family is in crisis. His father Yves (Louis Garrel) has lost his job but cannot bring himself to admit it; his mother Sandrine (Camille Cottin) yearns for more challenge after years working as a secretary. Tensions run high. As the family threatens to fall apart, Vincent experiences his first love and takes his first steps toward adulthood.

The film is an ode to the music, fashion and radio games of the 1980s, but above all tells a timeless story about a teenager finding himself and parents rediscovering each other. Nakache and Toledano, as in their earlier work, do not shy away from social issues - but show how hilarious everyday life can be.
