Film By The Sea: Minotaur

Podium 't Beest screens Minotaur, the latest film by Andrey Zvyagintsev, known for powerful Russian films such as The Return (2003) and Leviathan (2014), both previously shown at 't Beest.

When Russia invades Ukraine in 2022, a successful businessman feels the consequences firsthand. In the village where he lives comfortably with his wife and son, friends and employees leave - some heading west, others conscripted into the Russian army. The loss of staff threatens his business, and he discovers his wife is unfaithful. The geopolitical turmoil and domestic crisis push him to the brink.

Minotaur draws a parallel between the Russian conflict with Ukraine and the personal existence of a wealthy Russian on the verge of collapse. The film is partly inspired by Claude Chabrol and casts a sharp light on contemporary Russian society.
