Film By The Sea: Youri

Every year, Podium 't Beest participates as a satellite venue in Film By The Sea, screening a curated selection from the festival programme. Tonight features the festival's opening film: Youri, the latest work by director Sander Burger, known for the acclaimed De Veroordeling (2021) about the Deventer murder case.

In 1976, world-renowned concert pianist Youri Egorov flees the Soviet Union due to his sexual orientation. In 1980s Amsterdam, he is interviewed by introverted journalist Jan Brokken, and a deep friendship develops between these two very different men. Egorov is played by Georgian actor Levan Gelbachiani (And Then We Danced); Brokken by Joes Brauers (known from a woman as monique, Hardcore Never Dies). Burger based this historical drama on Jan Brokken's autobiographical novel In het huis van de dichter (2008), depicting a capital city in turbulent times and two men each finding the courage to shape their own lives in their own way.
