Globe Autumn School - Introduction to the Traverso for Secondary School Students
Heuvellaan Hilversum, Hilversum
This ticket grants active participation in the traverso introduction workshop, the teachers' concert, and access to the instrument market.
From 16 to 18 October 2026, an autumn school takes place at Heuvellaan Hilversum centred on German flautist, composer and flute maker Johann Joachim Quantz (1697-1773). Quantz was the flute teacher of King Frederick the Great, and his famous treatise on the flute remains an important source in historically informed performance practice. Professional and amateur recorder and flute players and makers gather to discuss Quantz as composer and maker, and his significance for the performance of 18th-century music.
The programme includes lectures, masterclasses, open sessions, an instrument market, a concert, a forum discussion and an introduction workshop on the traverso especially for secondary school students.
Do you already play the recorder or flute and are you curious about the 18th-century predecessor of the silver flute? On Saturday 17 October, traverso teacher Mirjam van der Maas will guide you through the sound possibilities of the traverso in two sessions (10:15 and 11:30). Loan instruments are available. Following this is an instrument market where makers display and demonstrate their instruments, and at 13:00 traverso player Benedek Csalog and some colleagues give a teachers' concert.
Mirjam van der Maas studied modern flute at the Hilversum Conservatory and subsequently took traverso lessons with Jed Wentz, which led to studies as a performing musician at the Amsterdam University of the Arts. She performs regularly with Concerto Amsterdam and Capella Maria Barbara, played on the CD recording of the oratorio "Joseph" by Musica ad Rhenum and made a recording with the modern flute ensemble The Magic Flute. Since August 1999 she has been teaching at Globe, centre for art and culture in Hilversum.
