Science Café Amersfoort — FLUOR, Amersfoort

Katrien Keune, chief scientist at the Rijksmuseum, leads the restoration of Rembrandt's Night Watch. She holds a PhD in chemistry and is a professor of molecular spectroscopy at the University of Amsterdam. In her lecture, she explains how the latest research techniques have shed light on the pigments and varnishes Rembrandt used - and what this reveals about the painting's original colours.

The restoration began in July 2019 with an investigation phase lasting over two years. A team of more than a hundred people - conservators, restorers, materials and chemical scientists, and art historians - mapped how the painting was created, its current condition, and how best to preserve it. These findings form the basis for the ongoing restoration.

Entry is free, but you do need a (free) ticket. You can reserve one through FLUOR's ticketing system.
