On 1 February, relatives and interested visitors gather at the Watersnood Museum in Ouwerkerk for the annual commemoration of the Watersnood disaster. At the monument of Gust Romijn, a moment of silence is held for those who did not survive the disaster.

About the venue: Watersnoodmuseum

The Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk is housed in four caissons that were used to seal the breached dikes in Zeeland after the catastrophic flood of 1953, in which more than 1,800 people lost their lives. The museum tells the story of that disaster through personal accounts, photographs and objects. The caissons themselves serve as a tangible monument to the event.
