Ilang Jawane

In this personal documentary, father and son Wouter and Sriyanto van der Spoel travel across Java in search of their family history and what it means to be both Dutch-Indonesian and Javanese.

Their journey takes them through Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bandung and smaller villages like Cikijing - places intertwined with their own family and with Indonesia's broader history. Along the way, they discover that this same history looks quite different when viewed from another perspective.

A Javanese saying runs through the film as a connecting thread: Wong Jowo.
