Verburg and Pekelder

Historians Jacco Pekelder and Marja Verburg give a lecture on the changing relationship between the Netherlands and Germany. They discuss their new book "Neighbourhood Under Pressure", in which they re-examine cooperation between the two countries.

For years, this relationship was characterized by stability and mutual trust, but that sense of inevitability has diminished in recent years. Political changes, geopolitical tensions, the energy transition, and security issues call for a fresh perspective on cooperation. Using current developments and examples from the border region, they outline how the Dutch-German relationship has evolved and what challenges lie ahead.

Jacco Pekelder is professor and director of the Centre for Netherlands Studies at the University of Münster. Marja Verburg is affiliated with the Germany Institute at the University of Amsterdam.
