Elia Penrose Quartet

Singer Elia Penrose performs with her quartet: pianist Miguel Rodriguez, bassist Matheus Nicolaiewsky, and drummer Sander Smeets. The programme features jazz standards, Brazilian pieces, and original compositions. This concert is part of the Friday Night Jazz series, made possible by the Stichting Jazz at the Club and Podium De Nieuwe Kamer.

Elia Penrose studied at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. She has previously performed with her own EGLE Ensemble, the Jazz Philharmonic Orchestra of St. Petersburg, and the Vilnius Jazz Orchestra. Her debut album "Bird's Notes" was recorded with percussionist Kiko Freitas.

Miguel Rodriguez studied at the conservatories of Rotterdam and Amsterdam and is a pianist, composer, and teacher. He has performed with the Benjamin Herman Quartet, the Ben van den Dungen Quartet, and the Maarten Hogenhuis Quartet, and has played alongside Peter Bernstein, Donald Harrison, and Branford Marsalis. Brazilian bassist Matheus Nicolaiewsky plays both electric and double bass and has accompanied musicians including Mike LeDonne, Benjamin Herman, Trijntje Oosterhuis, and Vincent Herring. Drummer Sander Smeets studied at the conservatories of Tilburg and Rotterdam (CODARTS) and spent time studying in New Orleans. He has accompanied Roy Hargrove, Rufus Reid, and Ellis Marsalis, performed with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, and is founder and bandleader of the bigband Dutch Jazz Collective.
