Swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch has been called 'The Scientist of groove' by the press. With his band Ronin, he combines jazz and minimal music with driving grooves built from the ground up. Bärtsch himself calls it zen-funk or 'ritual groove music'.

Ronin was founded in 2001 following Bärtsch's time in Japan. The band has released several albums on ECM Records. The pieces - which Bärtsch calls 'modules' - are constructed from short phrases that are gradually developed into a major climax. Funk, contemporary classical music and Japanese ritual music flow through them, yet the music always retains a distinctive character.

After a previous Paradox show, De Volkskrant wrote: 'The live improvisations of Nik Bärtsch's band Ronin at Paradox were at times breathtaking.'

Two concerts: one in the afternoon and one in the evening. Line-up: Sha (alto saxophone, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet), Nik Bärtsch (piano), Jeremias Keller (bass guitar), Kaspar Rast (drums).
