PJO - New Trees On Old Ground: Jos Machtel, Ariadne Van den Brande & Amis
Paradox Jazz Orchestra invites the audience to witness the complete creative process: from rehearsal to recording. In the New Trees on Old Ground series, PJO musicians have carte blanche to explore what inspires them now, with space for guest musicians and freedom in approach. Each programme yields three to five tracks as a release.
For this project, vocalist Ariadne Van den Brande leads a specially assembled ensemble drawing from French chanson of the 1920-1960 period. The repertoire features work by Jacques Prévert, Yves Montand, Catherine Sauvage, Juliette Gréco, Léo Ferré and Jacques Brel. Trumpeter Bert Joris writes new arrangements for part of the repertoire - not to fix the music, but as a starting point for seven distinctive voices. Improvisation is central: the musicians explore the space between song and moment, between French chanson, jazz and contemporary improvisation.
Tickets are available as a passepartout (rehearsal & dinner on 10 September and recording session on 11 September) for € 60 or as a single ticket for the recording session on 11 September for € 20. During the recording session, the same set is performed before and after the interval.
Line-up: Ariadne Van den Brande (vocals), Bert Joris (trumpet), Jesse Schilderink (saxophone), Joshua Herwig (cello), Rembrandt Frerichs (piano), Jos Machtel (double bass), Niek de Bruin (drums).
