PJO - New Trees on Old Ground — Paradox, Tilburg

New Trees On Old Ground gives the musicians of Paradox Jazz Orchestra space to create new music rooted in the jazz and big band tradition. For each edition, a different artist receives carte blanche: with guest musicians, new compositions and arrangements, they put together their own programme.

What makes New Trees On Old Ground special is that the audience not only hears the final result, but can also be part of the creative process. Each edition spans two days: first rehearsal, then recording, so you can watch the music take shape and grow. You can buy a pass for both days, or attend only the recording session. During the recording session, the same set is played before and after the break. Each edition produces three to five tracks that will be released.

On Sunday 22 November, trumpeter Teus Nobel is the central figure. He plays alongside jazz harpist Sara Brink Nielsen, alto saxophonist Donald Simoen and bassist/cellist Tim Brandsen. With this line-up, he brings his own compositions and arrangements of jazz standards, with the blues as an important foundation. Rehearsal runs from 10:00 to 13:00, the concert begins at 15:00.

Trumpet, alto saxophone, harp, double bass and cello together create a rich sound palette and space for new musical combinations. In this way, existing jazz traditions take on new forms, complemented by music written especially for this ensemble.
