Blom, Schlarmann & Fasciani - WonderYears
In the 1970s, Stevie Wonder released a series of legendary albums in rapid succession. Nearly all compositions from that period became worldwide hits and have remained etched in our collective memory ever since. His blend of grooves, infectious melodies, and jazz influences lends itself perfectly to improvisation.
Fifty years after the release of Songs in the Key of Life, Jasper Blom, Sean Fasciani, and Felix Schlarmann bring these compositions back to life on their album WonderYears. The ensemble is pure jazz: tenor saxophone, double bass, and drums. The characteristic melodies and harmonies from Wonder's repertoire serve as the starting point for contemporary arrangements.
Sometimes the three musicians let the original song shine through clearly, then venture into rhythmically and harmonically more adventurous territory - from intimate moments to bursts of improvisation.
