Norwegian metal band Shining plays what they call 'blackjazz': raw avant-garde metal with electronic influences and a piercing saxophone. If you're familiar with Devin Townsend or Dillinger Escape Plan, you're in the right territory; if you grew up with Ministry, you'll recognize the industrial layer too.

The driving force behind the band is Jørgen Munkeby - vocalist, guitarist and the man behind the virtuoso saxophone solos. Following the live album Blackjazz Live At The Heavy Water Plant from 2024, they are currently working on a new studio album.

What began as a jazz quartet in Oslo in 1999 has, under Jørgen Munkeby's relentless direction, become one of metal's most distinctive forces - nine albums deep into a self-invented genre where saxophone, industrial electronics and extreme metal collide. About: Jørgen Munkeby

Jørgen Munkeby is the Norwegian multi-instrumentalist who fronts Shining (Norway), the band behind the self-coined "blackjazz" genre - a collision of extreme metal, jazz and electronics. He plays saxophone, guitar and handles vocals, having trained as a jazz musician at the conservatory in Trondheim before pushing the music into far harsher territory.
